Akkerman Finland Oy was notified by Tukes, that the Kolima exploration permit in the municipality of Viitasaari has legally come into effect on the13th of July 2026. The permit covers an area of 668,59 Ha with potential for zinc mineralization, based on earlier studies by the Geological Survey of Finland in the period 1957-1993. In total 70 holes were drilled, revealing low-grade zinc over an area of 200-400m wide and 2000m long.
During the official hearing process, concerns were expressed related to a Natura 2000 – and groundwater protected area, both located outside of the permit area. The company subsequently reduced the outline of the area applied taking into account the various statements made.
Tukes granted the reduced permit area on the 23rd of March 2023, registered as ML2022-0003. However, this decision was appealed and referred to the Administrative Court of Hämeenlinna. The court requested certain adjustments in the application to minimise environmental risks related to waste generated by future exploration drillholes. Once these were made and the permit was reapplied for. No further appeals were filed and the permit became valid.
Kolima is one of 7 exploration projects owned by Akkerman Finland Oy in the Vihanti-Pyhäsalmi mining district. Work to date has resulted in the definition of several promising drill targets with potential for copper-zinc-gold-silver of volcanogenic origin.
